Files
New, open and windows
Starting a screenplay, opening one, the recent files, and what happens to a file you double-click or drop on the app.
On this page
A window holds one screenplay. To have two open at once, you open two windows. (On Android there is one screen, and it holds one screenplay.)
A new screenplay
, or Ctrl+N⌘N.
- On Windows, macOS and Linux it opens a new window with a blank page. The window you were in stays as it was.
- On Android it replaces the screenplay on screen. If that one has changes that are not saved, you are asked first, unless it saves automatically.
Opening a screenplay
, or Ctrl+O⌘O, and choose a .fountain
file. It opens in this window, in place of the screenplay that was there:
- If that screenplay has changes that are not saved, you are asked whether to save them first. With automatic saving on, they are saved and nothing is asked, unless the last write to the file failed: then you are offered Save as, Close anyway or Cancel.
- The screenplay you leave goes to , so it can be brought back (see Version history and backups).
- If the file is already open in another window, that window comes to the front instead, and nothing is replaced. Two windows on one file would save over each other.
- If the file cannot be read, the screenplay you had stays on screen, untouched.
Calmly Script opens .fountain files. A Final Draft, PDF or Word file is read
with Import, which makes a new screenplay from it.
Recent files
lists the files you have opened or saved, newest first. Hold the pointer over one to see where it is; on a touch screen, where it is shows on a second line under its name. Choosing one opens it the way does.
Files from outside the app
A .fountain file you double-click in your file manager, open with Calmly
Script from another app, or drag onto the Calmly Script window never replaces
the screenplay you are working on:
- If the window is blank (a new page with nothing written on it), the file opens there.
- Otherwise it opens in a window of its own.
- If it is already open in a window, that window comes to the front.
On Android, where there is only one screen, a file opened with Calmly Script from another app takes the place of the one on screen, as does, question included.
Closing a window
or the window’s own close button. If the screenplay has changes that are not saved, you are asked whether to save them. Every screenplay you close, saved or not, goes to for a while, in case you want it back.
On Windows, macOS and Linux, the next time you start Calmly Script it opens on a blank page. Only when the app did not close properly, after a crash for instance, does it bring back the screenplays that had changes not yet saved, each in its own window (up to eight) and still marked as unsaved. One that was already saved is not reopened: it is safe in its file, and you open it as usual.
